[The personal computer...] that ultimate manifestation of the intimate machine…

-John Naughton

Computers used to be rooms
where you could walk into.
Now they are little boxes
that get into you.

You used to go to them.
Now they come with us.
Something hasn’t changed:
we still live in them.

The personal computer
is an intimate machine.
It goes to sleep with me.

Machines are extensions of the self.
If you could see into my hard drive
you would find he I think I am.

Hmmm…didn’t we have this conversation before?

    I know. I’m so common-place some mornings…

  3. 2007 September 4

    You’re never common place.

If you’ve never seen it, you might like Krystof Kieslowski’s “Decalogue” . It has a film-short, Decalogue 1, I think, about a computer.

I’ll second Amy’s recommendation. The whole set is amazing.

Yup, I saw Kieslowski’s Decalogue (and the Three Colours) a long time ago. To be honest I hardly remember the former… but I’ll try to get hold of it/them over here to remember… Thanks, Amy and Ginger!

I listened to that podcast twice yesterday, I think it was the beginning that got me. Was glad when it got cut off at the end…..that song should always be cut off (in my, not so humble in this case, opinion). Actually I enjoyed it being cut off twice, maybe it’s a guilty pleasure, that song.

LOL. It’s my guilty pleasure. It was written by Prince!

Ahhh…I love that last song…no guilt here. Of course I love Prince as well….

Listening to this in my office during my “office hours.”
